Halloween
Halloween is tomorrow! Are you ready? Most people already have their costumes ready for trick or treating and their pumpkins for carving but do you know why we do the silly things that we do on Halloween? Halloween stems from the festival known as Samhain which was to celebrate the harvest. The believed that on October 31 the boundaries between
the living and dead were overlapped and spirits would cause sickness or damage to crops. Masks and costumes were worn to mimic and appease the evil spirits. Trick or Treating dates back to the middle ages where people would the poor would go “souling” where they would walk door to door collecting food in exchange for prayers for the dead. It has obviously evolved much like the other traditions of Halloween.

All Souls Walk
Ready for Halloween? It’s right around the corner! A great way to get into the spirit is to attend some Halloween events! Why not participate in the 9th annual All Soul’s Walk. The walk will depart from the Brick Store Museum at 117 Main St in Kennebunk. The walk in narrated by costumed interpreters. The walk will go through the Hope Cemetery. It will begin at 1pm and continue until 4pm. During the walk you will hear stories from the last 3 centuries including a tale about ill fated sea captains, a civil war soldier and even a tragic tale from the White Mountains. The tour goes full circle to end back at the museum where there will be light refreshments for everyone. Admission is only $5 per person and will take place rain or shine!

Haunted Ghost Train
Looking for a fun filled and terrifying experience to get you in the mood for Halloween which is right around the corner? Why not head down to the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company & Museum and check out their Haunted Ghost Train! There will be train rides available on Friday October 26th and Saturday October 27th. There will be three sets of train rides each day. One departing at 5pm, one at 6pm and one that will depart at 7pm. All train rides will depart from the museum. The train will lead you around the spooky Casco Bay. Tickets are only $10 
per adult, $9 for seniors, and only $6 for children 12 and under. If you’re looking to be spooked this weekend the train rides are definitely worth checking out! Be careful thought because they do warn that you to take caution when boarding the train because zombies, ghosts and ghouls are known to be looking for fresh meat!

Great Maine Apple Day
An Apple a day keeps the doctor away! Stay healthy and celebrate Great Maine Apple Day on Sunday October 21. Celebrations will take place at the Common Ground Education Center in Unity. It is $4 to get in unless you are a MOFGA or Maine Pomological Society members, then admission is only $2. Events will be taking place from 12pm to 4pm. Come and celebrate the history and traditions of Maine apple picking. Also come to see and sample some rare heirloom apples. There will also be

Oqunquitfest

Harvestfest/Kidsfest!

Columbus Day!
Happy Columbus Day! Today we are celebrating Christopher Columbus’s arrival into the New World! To most it’s a great holiday because we get a 3 day weekend and it gives us the opportunity to recharge our batteries. Most people do not know why we really celebrate Columbus Day. The day officially became a federal holiday in 1937. Holiday celebrations have evolved to celebrate the Italian-American Heritage since Christopher Columbus was a born in Italy. The holiday is actually not until Friday the 12th which marks the day that Columbus stumbled on the Bahamas. Even though it is a federal holiday there are 3 states, Alaska, Hawaii and South Dakota that do not recognize the holiday. Christopher Columbus is responsible for introducing horses into the Americas. Columbus Day is also known as Discovery Day!
